The class will be intensive and companionable, with strong, individualized support for each participant as well as the cultivation and resonance of a community of peers. We will write (and read) across genres including but not limited to poetry, song, memoir, fiction, nonfiction, drama, and journalism.
What I am most interested in is in supporting you in the further development of your own idiosyncratic writing practice and vision. The class is intended to be sustaining. All readings and exercises are optional and may be tailored to suit individual needs.
"You can imagine your way to the truth." -- Maxine Hong Kingston
"I love memoirs. They are probably my favorite literary form, along with biographies. The more confessional, the better. There is so, so, so little truth in the popular culture, and I am starved and grateful for any I can find." -- Anne Lamott
"Remember the plants, trees, animal life, who all have their
tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems." -- Joy Harjo
"The imaginal life is central to the human story, and should be central to the writing and teaching of history." --Jacques Le Goff
"my spirit is too ancient to understand the separation of soul & gender" -- Ntozake Shange
"We should be making a determined effort to move forward in the creation of a continental culture that understands itself as a totality and a novelty whose only concern is creating forms of existence that provide everyone involved with a sense of integrity and identity." -- Vine Deloria Jr.
"here is our cardinal signature/now is our languageless phrase" -- Elizabeth Treadwell
